Goodyear
Wrangler MT/R

Over
the last few seasons we have been running Goodyear’s offering to
the off-road world, the Goodyear MT/R. This is their more aggressive offering,
targeted for those who seek the best in off-road performance, while still
maintaining a vehicle that can be driven regularly on the street and highway.

First
thing we noticed about these tires, aside from having a nice look, on
the vehicle (always a plus) is they ride great on the street. Thanks to
the radial design, these tires do not lose round or develop flats pots
like many of the bias-ply tires available, which can be appreciated with
a tire that handles tracks as good as any tire out there, even at highway
speeds, with a surprisingly low level of tire noise. Our tires were also
very easy to balance requiring very little weight to balance them.
Off the road, the MT/R proves to be a very solid
all-around tire. The 3-ply construction, and the more aggressive side
walls prove to be very nice features, especially in the southeast where
we have a mix, of mud, rocks, and sharp tree roots, not only as additional
providers of tire protection, but traction as well.

The MT/R handles muddy trails, reasonably well,
even in the off-camber spots. In the thicker mud and clay, around here
in Southeast the MT/R will pack and spin, which can be an issue on trails
with lots of clay and slick rock, in this situation you’ll find
your self using the winch. On dry rock, however, the MT/R delivers great
traction, and if it wont quite grip enough, a couple touches on the throttle
to warm the rubber up, and you’ll gain a little extra traction.
Is it the best mud tire, or the best tire for rock
crawling? No, but for those who want a tire that will do it all, rocks,
mud, dry, wet, dry and still get you around town as well as the trail
and back again, it is hard to recommend another tire.
