Land Rover Discovery Brake Valve

On a particularly cold January morning, I noticed the brakes in the Discovery didn’t feel quite right, and on my drive in, they felt progressively squishier. When I finally parked the Discovery, I noticed a pool of brake fluid forming under the Discovery. Upon inspection it appeared to be coming from the brake valve on the inner driver side fender well. I ordered the replacement part, and after limping the Discovery to our makeshift shop later that night, we removed the brake valve to find that the rubber seal end piece had completely dry rotted out allowing air to freely enter the brake system, and the fluid to freely leave, a very dangerous problem to have, and one that if it occurs needs to be rectified immediately, and in retrospect, as soon as I realized something was going wrong with the brakes, I should have immediacy pulled over rather than limp it to my destination.

Removal and installation was simple and straightforward. Simply un-bolt the brake lines from the brake valve, and then unbolt the valve from the inner fender well. To install the new valve simply bolt all the brake lines into the new valve taking care not to get any dirty into the valve or brake lines, and bolt it back in place on the fender well. Once the valve is back in place, bleed the brake system thoroughly to ensure all air is out of the brake lines, and then test the brakes, at low speed, in an area with no traffic (i.e. empty parking lot), before you take the Discovery back onto the road.
