1995 Land Rover Discovery Coolent Reservior

As the Series I Discoveries are getting older, some parts will begin to need replacing as a result of their age, and years of service. One such part is the coolent reservoir. As they age they become brittle from the heat of the engine bay and are prone to develop stress cracks. Symptoms of these cracks range from hissing and gurgling after the engine has to been cut off. There might also be dripping and leaking antifreeze from around the reservoir, without the engine having overheated.

Notice the concentrated white areas, around the seam where the stress cracks are allowing gases and coolent to escape.

If you are replacing the coolent reservoir it might be a good time to consider flushing the cooling system, however, having done this 3 weeks earlier after replacing the waterpump we did not see the need to do it again.

Replacing the Coolent Reservoir:

1. Using a ratchet remove the 3 bolts that hold the coolent reservoir in place.
2. Using a screwdriver loosen the hose clamp on the small hose at the front of the reservoir. Disconnect the small hose at the front of the reservoir, and move the hose out of the way where the end will be held open-end up to prevent coolent from leaking from the radiator.
3. Using a screwdriver loosen the hose clamp at the main (large) hose, and disconnect if from the reservoir while keeping the end upright to keep coolent from draining out.
4. Connect the new coolent reservoir to the two hoses, tighten the clamps, and bolt the new reservoir into place.
