Project:
Land Rover Discovery Wilderness Roof Rack
An
excellent addition to any truck that sees off-road use or has to carry
large loads is a roof rack. A roof rack gives a truck the additional space
to carry large, bulky items such as jerry cans and spare tires, and allows
a place for mounting extra lighting and other accessories such as a Hi-Lift
jack, shovels and various other gear.
The
particular roof rack on the Project Discovery is a Wilderness Rack from
Garvin Industries. The Wilderness Rack is solidly constructed from box
steel tubing and covers the full length of the Discovery’s roof. The Wilderness
Rack requires assembly, but the job is straightforward and takes very
little time, especially if done with two people. All that’s needed to
put the Wilderness Rack together are a couple of wrenches and a ratchet.
Once the rack is assembled, just get a few buddies to help hoist it up
onto the roof, adjust and tighten the mounts, and you’re ready to go.
The rack mounts easily onto the rain gutters so no special preparation
is required. Of course, this also means that the rack is easy to remove
as well.
The
Wilderness Rack’s greatest asset is its versatility. It comes with removable
flooring bars, and Garvin offers an extensive line of accessories such
as mounts for a Hi-Lift jack, spare tire, Pull-Pal, brackets for a shovel
and axe, additional lighting and other accessories, including adapters
for Thule and Yakima bike and ski racks. These options allow the Wilderness
rack to be customized to meet individual preferences.
The
rack on the Project Discovery is the 6” model, with the Hi-Lift and shovel
and axe mount, as well as six light brackets, including four forward facing
for additional rally lights and two on the rear for the work lights. The
only potential downside of the Wilderness rack is the clearance between
the rear of Discovery’s roof and the rack. Owners of Discoveries with
dual sunroofs will lose use of the rear sunroof, as there is not enough
clearance to allow the rear sunroof to open. We chose to disable the rear
sunroof by disconnecting the switches, preventing any mishaps that could
occur if it opened accidentally.
